Being involved in a car accident or having a breakdown can be a frightening experience.

It is not something that anyone prepares for, but there are a few things you should know ahead of time that will give you peace of mind when faced with this type of situation.

If your car breaks down, or is involved in an accident, the golden rule is: always go through your insurance company’s assistance service. It is very important that you only use the service providers that are approved by your insurer. Using a towing company or storage facility that is not approved, can cost you money out of your own pocket. Storage over a long weekend or over the festive season can amount to thousands and cover is often limited in terms of the policy if the approved assistance service was not used.

It is vital to have your (Do Not Tow) sticker clearly pasted on the window of your car to avoid unapproved providers from trying to move your car in an emergency, especially if you have been injured and cannot speak for yourself.

Insurance companies have service level agreements with providers who are reliable, safe and have a proven track record. Be careful of the unapproved towing companies which may respond to the scene and then try to convince you that they are insurance approved when they are not.

Below is a list of various insurers’ assistance lines that are used by FPM. We recommend that you load your insurer’s Roadside Assist contacts on your cell phone and advise others who may drive your vehicle(s) to do likewise.
