Some screening benefits are free… Are you using them?

The earlier medical conditions are detected the better.

Discovery Health offers to all members their Screening and Prevention Benefit, which does not affect your day-to-day benefits.

The screening and tests covered from this benefit are as follows:

One every two years, paid up to the Discovery Health rate. High risk members now also have access to additional tests provided they meet certain clinical criteria.  High risk members include:

  • A strong family history of breast cancer
  • A genetic predisposition to breast cancer (BRCA positive)
  • A personal history of breast cancer
  • Specific ethnicity (e.g. Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern or Central Europe decent and Afrikaner women of Dutch decent)

Pap Smear

One PAP smear every three years, paid up to the Discovery Health rate. High risk members will be eligible for yearly screening

Prostrate – PSA test

One per year, paid up to the Discovery Health rate

HIV blood tests (includes Rapid, ELISA and Western blot)

An unlimited amount of HIV screening tests are covered, paid up to the Discovery Health rate.

The group of tests covered at a Discovery Health Wellness network provider include Blood Glucose, Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and Body Mass Index or weight assessment.

Growth assessment tests for children at a network pharmacy include weight, height, head circumference and health milestone tracking

And for those who are over the age of 65 years and are registered for one of the following chronic conditions, the seasonal flu vaccination:

  • Asthma
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Cardiac failure
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • COPD
  • Chronic renal disease
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Diabetes (Types 1 and 2)
  • HIV

Remember, early detection of a disease is more likely to be cured or successfully managed, and in the long run makes living with the condition easier to live with.
